Dr Ryan Nugent Joins the Southside Eye Centre Team
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Ryan Nugent to Southside Eye Centre. Dr. Nugent is a highly skilled specialist ophthalmologist with a comprehensive interest in all aspects of general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and oculoplastics. His surgical expertise includes phacoemulsification (cataract surgery), blepharoplasty, ptosis, brow ptosis, ectropion, entropion, skin cancer removal and reconstruction, chalazion, and lacrimal (tear duct) surgery.
Dr. Nugent’s journey in medicine is as diverse as it is impressive. Spending his childhood in Thailand and India, he returned to Australia to complete his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. His career began in multiple locations throughout Queensland before he embarked on specialist ophthalmology training at the Sydney Eye Hospital in New South Wales. His training allowed him to gain valuable experience in remote, regional, and metropolitan areas, and participate in numerous overseas missions to support people in developing countries. These missions took him to Myanmar, Malawi, South Africa, Cambodia, and Laos, where he fulfilled his passion for global health.
After earning his fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, Dr. Nugent served as a consultant in regional Tasmania. He then moved to Calgary, Canada, where he completed further subspecialty training in Oculoplastics and Lacrimal Surgery, a move that also allowed him to indulge in his love for the outdoors.
Dr. Nugent is not only a dedicated clinician but also an active contributor to the field of ophthalmology. He is a published author in international ophthalmology journals and has presented his work at both the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) meetings.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Nugent enjoys fly fishing, hiking, playing guitar, and spending quality time with his wife and daughter.
