Eye injections (intravitreal injections)

One of the great wonders of modern medicine has been the development of intravitreal injections for the treatment of conditions such as wet macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions.  Prior to the development of these injections people frequently suffered blindness from these diseases.  Since the development of drugs such as Avastin, Lucentis, Eylea and Vabysmo patients with these conditions are able to preserve their vision.

Do I feel pain with eye injections?

This is the most common question our patients ask us.  Please know that with anaesthetic drops the eye can be numbed so that the injection of the drug is not felt.

How often do I need the injections?

Initially the injections are given each month until the condition is controlled.  Once this occurs (usually after a few months), the interval between injections is increased.  If the injections are able to be extended out to every 3 or 4 months, stopping the injections can be considered.
